PROJECT LA CHICA LOCA
My name is Victor del Abrego Arce. 12 years ago I got idea of making this project. It took all this time for my vision to become crystal clear and to bring it to life.
LA CHICA LOCA is a brand and a project that is dedicated to the promotion of handicrafting high quality products of agave. Agave is the most representative plant of Mexico that has lots of varieties and tastes and we want to let the world know as much as possible about it. Our logo la Calavera or la Catrina ('Dapper Skeleton', 'Elegant Skull') is a modernized version of what was made by famous Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer Jose Guadalupe Posadas from the pre-revolution era year 1910. She, in particular, has become an icon of the Mexican D’a de los muertos, or Day of the Death. To this we added our La Chica Loca name that simply represents the fun character and simplicity of our Latin American roots.
The history of agave plant and what it represents to Mexican people is deep and long but I will explain it shortly. For the process of distillation to start it requires 8 to 12 years for agave plant to mature. It takes 8 kilos of this gigantic plant to make just a liter of one of this exquisite products such as Mezcal La Chica Loca! Mezcal is pure product without additives and most important, without sugar added in its preparation. To be clear, is a completely organic product grew in clean lands. Is not an industrial product. Like I mentioned, product is handcrafted and there are people called Maestros Mezcaleros whose job is cutting, cooking and making the Mezcal. They are real artists that have history and tradition of making it. I can say with no exaggeration that by drinking the Mezcal you are drinking art and history. Tradition of making Mezcal of agave is five centuries long and still nowadays agave is smashed in rocks with the horse mill.
For this reason La Chica Loca is a Brand that is interested in interacting and promoting art and culture of Mexicans in the world and Belgrade is a young and curious city where we decided to start our first settlement in Europe.
We bring art through our products, logo and name and for the same reasons we support art. This time we support a Mexican artist Israel Alvarez (FRYZ) who is great Mexican street artist. With this event we are opening our cultural section and we hope more artist will come searching for a space for expressing themselves; we are willing to help them and we hope all people may enjoy this fresh start and concept. We are open to support all kind of art no matter of its form.
For last we want to tell that our products can be found in Belgrade in Mezcaleria La Chica Loca that is currently located in Pop Lukina number 12, and in Toro Latin GastroBar. We are expecting to have bigger diversity of products until the end of the year. We know that once you try our product you will keep track of the new ones to come.
After this small introduction I represent you our Mexican friend and artist Israel, who will soon come to spice up the color of our place.
Israel Alvarez (FRYZ)
COULD YOU PLEASE DESCRIBE YOU AND YOUR WORK?
My name is Israel Alvarez (FRYZ) and I was born in Mexico. I am a calm, happy person and I would describe my work as the constant study of colors and my perception of light by using elements that surround me and are a constant in my world.
ARE YOU PRIMARARILY AN ARTIST OR DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER JOB?
Since three years ago, I am dedicated full-time to art; I work at a design-workshop where we develop all kinds of creative interiors, art and products; IÕve been learning different painting techniques on top of the street art that I keep on doing whenever there is a wall and supplies available.
WHAT ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCES IN YOUR ARTISTIC CAREER THAT ARE STILL INFLUENCING YOUR STYLE AND YOUR PERSONALITY?
The most significant experiences where during my childhood; the freedom I had playing and exploring my surroundings; understanding nature and its meaning in my own way. These experiences define who I am and what I want to transmit with my paintings.
HOW OLD WERE YOU THE FIRST TIME YOU TAGGED A WALL?
I was 13 years old and it was illegal.
WHEN DID YOU DO YOUR FIRST MURAL?
The first mural I completed was when I was 20 years old, the year 2009.
CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR STYLE? WHAT INSPIRED IT?
I have a very fluid style; I can already have an idea put into paper but as I keep on painting I always end up adding new elements; like finding new shapes and ways while painting.
Inspiration comes from music or even when walking towards home; simple things and actions that trigger my creativity.
IS THERE ANY STREET ARTIST YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH?
I would like to work with MOTICK. or MR. TOTEM as well. In my little research about graffiti in Belgrade I also found great street artists .
WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE THROUGH YOUR PUBLIC MESSAGES?
I like that as I find something beautiful in nature and place it in walls, people could find those same beautiful things I get inspired with seen through my eyes and messages; contribute with my art to create a more sensitive world.
HOW MANY WALLS DO YOU DO A YEAR?
It is not something I have programmed; it varies depending on the economic side as well as time. Aside of wall-art I also paint on canvas, different sizes, different techniques.
FAVORITE PLACES THAT YOU HAVE PAINTED?
I enjoy painting forgotten, lonely places; where regular people wouldnÕt go in. I also like graffiti festivals where we get to exchange information and hang with all the different artists which makes me really crazy and special.
DEFINE A GRAFFITI ARTIST.
A Graffiti artist is constantly in danger; it is a natural state for us. We are always willing to invade any space/wall with or without a messageÉ (rebel heartbeat hahaha)
WHICH STREET/ GRAFFITI ARTIST DO YOU MOST ADMIRE /RESPECT?
I have a lot of respect for my friend my ÒcompadreÓ graffiti artist Cristian Hernandes A.K.A. SNEIC. I grew up painting along him; together we have failed and learned a lot of things; I donÕt know any other graffiti artist with more passion for this than him .
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT ITS LIKE FOR YOU WHEN YOU PAINT A WALL?
For me the world stops and I become isolated. It is a bit irresponsible but it is what it is. Sometimes I donÕt think about the message sketched; it is just me and colors; I really enjoy these moments by myself.
HOW DO YOU FIGHT THE GHOSTS IN YOUR LIFE? DOES THE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION HAVE A CATHARTIC EFFECT OF MAKING ITS AUTHOR FACE INNER CHAOS AND ELIMINATE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS?
Basically with dedication and believing in what IÕm doing. I am convinced that I got something; I choose to do this in my life and there is no ghost that would stop me. Definitely; it is a dissection of your ownself; for me it is something sensual to look at you and feel good to see yourself when those feelings detach.
DO YOU HAVE WORK IN THE GALLERIAS?
Last year I showed several pieces of my work at an event showcased by ICH. We go to sell two of my paintings which were shipped to Texas in the USA. This was the second time my work was showcased.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT?
I am living my dream project which is to travel the world spreading my Mexican message and point of view, doing what I love.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE ROLE OF THE STREET ARTIST IN SOCIETY?
Street art at least in Latin America is a shine of light; it is a fight against everything to be able to do what you love. Over here it is quite impossible to live decently through any kind of artistic expressions; we artists live in a constant struggle of creating art without any commitment, with a real feeling and no monetary profit but the sole satisfaction of doing it.
DO YOU THINK THAT STREET ART IS IDEALLY FREE, EPHEMERAL, ACCESSIBLE AND ILLEGAL?
Nowadays there are tons of artists redefining, reinventing the term (street-art). For me, art is the search of your ownself in a way others could understand the beauty of what you were feeling when you painted a wall; it doesnÕt matter how ephemeral, free or illegal it is.
WHATÕS YOUR FAVOURITE ARTWORK-EVER? AND WHY?
Having this opportunity of travelling through Europe for a whole month, being able to explore and witness for the first time all of these ancient and new forms of art, I couldnÕt mention one specific artwork right now.
WHAT ARE YOU PREPARING FOR YOUR BIG BELGRADE DEBUT?
We are bringing to Europe a piece of what my beloved country is. Lots of color, joy, dedication and mucho MEZCAL LA CHICA LOCA. I am sure you will like all about this place, paintings , drinks and project of this brand that is starting to be a success in Mexico and for sure in other places as well, with this im trying to say that we have a big gratitude to LA CHICA LOCA and Victor as well to give us the hand and alloud us to put more color to his brand and place in Belgrade..
